Conversation with Jack Callahan: A Trooper For the Sport

by Lisa White

Jack Callahan, husband of Debbie Callahan, promoter of the NPC Central Florida District Championships may be known for his outlandish suits but there is much to learn from this man who emcees regularly in the district shows. In his interview on the Bodybuilding Fitness Figure show with Musclepapa John Hawley there are good stories and jokes but a serious undertone to the conversation. Jack was the emcee for seven shows last year but has been invited and accepted the responsibility of being the emcee for ten shows this year. The art behind being Master of Ceremonies is to keep everything moving smoothly and to keep the atmosphere up beat and positive.

Having competed in bodybuilding and mixed-pairs bodybuilding with Deb; Jack understands how hard the sport can be and what an impact any negativity displayed by the crowd can have on a competitor. This retired Polk County Law Enforcement Officer feels heckling and negative shouts have no business being at a bodybuilding event and the audience needs to participate and participate positively. All the competitors have worked hard to be on the stage and this should feel like a moment of accomplishment for them. Jack also gives Debbie credit for instilling the athletes with the beliefs, "you go with the best package you've got. You put it on the stage and present it the best you can. You can not control the judges. You can not control who shows up and stands next to you. All you can do is be the best you can be and that is why it's so important that people route for each other. And the people in the crowds lift those people up."

Both John and Jack agree that the energy is so important for the athletes and must do the best with what they have earned and been blessed with. Competitors who get upset because they don't place well should see it as a stepping stone and a way to have fun. Even smaller competitors like Brian Garcia brings a shredded body to the stage and has a group of athletes who have followed his lead with many wanting to thank him for the help and training he has provided.
Besides doing the emceeing for the events Jack is also knee-deep with promoting their NPC Central Florida District Championships Show which is a two day event and athletes can check in Friday or Saturday at the Pope Theater. IFBB Pro Beveryly Direnzo will be there for guest posing and Debbie and Pete Fancher have put together a seminar for Sunday morning for judges, athlete or trainer who would like to participate. This is a free event and Jack believes everyone should take advantage of. For any athlete that's interested in competing in the NPC or Florida Districts this is a great way to learn what the judges are looking for on stage. The judges will explain proper posing, why it should be done that way and its importance. For personal trainers with clients who compete this is an opportunity to learn from in order to offer clients the best chance for doing well in events.
